While I might have had more success following some of the general guidelines for placement of the bird house and avoiding the pitfalls mentioned above, I still might not have received any feathered tenants. As I’ve learned, each species of bird has specific criteria that a bird house must meet, including proper placement of the house, if they are to select one in which to raise their young.

Learn from my mistakes. Do your homework and, while there is never any guarantee that bird family will make its home in your bird house, you can increase the likelihood considerably.

My first mistake, therefore, was not knowing what kind of bird the house was for. It is possible the birds the house was designed for didn’t even live in the area! Make sure you really notice what is going on with your bird house. This will tell you weather you have maintenance to do our if aggressive birds like the European starlings or house swallows are moving in and taking over. The best time for maintenance and installing new birdhouses is in the fall or early winter. Birds seem to prefer the rustic look over the freshly painted one. If you do feel the urge to paint, make sure to avoid dark colors and never paint the inside of the home or sides of the entrance hole.

There are many types of bird house that you can choose and sometimes it can become confusing to choose the right one. In this case, the first thing that you should consider is the size of your garden. If you have a large garden, then you can choose a big one that can accommodate many birds. On the other hand, it is better to have a small one if you only have a limited space.
